Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow coral fringed lagoon on the quieter north-east coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe’s peaceful location and famed relaxed atmosphere, makes it the ideal place to unwind. The open-air restaurant sits just above the sea and has a tranquil lounge area with beautiful views of the palm fringed beach and gently rocking dhows. Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar.
Matemwe is made up of only twelve beach chalets all overlooking the Indian Ocean. Each of the private verandas is furnished
with large hammocks and sofas, perfect for whiling away the time as the occasional dhow drifts past in the distance. The large bathrooms have both a deep bathtub and walk-in shower and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets.
While staying at Matemwe is conducive to watching the world drift by at a leisurely pace, there are a number of activities available to more active guests. Snorkel and dive in the marine park at Mnemba Atoll, go deep-sea fishing, undertake excursions to historic Stone Town or simplymake the most of the secluded beach with a swim and a stroll.
On the conservation side, Matemwe has introduced a hatching site for green turtles on its secluded beach. Every year, green turtles hatch here, ensuring the survival of this important species.
One of only a handful of boutique lodges in Zanzibar, Matemwe is perched on a coral rock outcrop
overlooking a white sandy beachgently sloping into the Indian Ocean. Adjacent to the lodge, the corals surrounding
the Mnemba Atoll offer superb diving and snorkeling.
